Just 90 minutes outside Atlanta, the town of Elberton, GA is home to a mysterious monument: The Georgia Guidestones. 

The stones consist of two massive granite slabs weighing more than 100 tons, which an anonymous donor paid to have engraved with a few words of advice: Guidelines in eight languages for how to rebuild society after a nuclear attack.

The 30-some-year-old Guidestones are no hidden secret, as evidenced by the tens of thousands of YouTube videos about them (see one below).

Seeing all the online chatter about his hometown's monument gave local businessman Mart Clamp an idea. Clamp, who helped his father engrave the stones more than three decades ago, is hoping to use them to revitalize Elberton’s flagging economy.

He's hoping to draw tourists to visit the stones in an annual festival that could give a must-needed boost to Elberton. He joins The Takeaway to discuss the stones and his efforts.

Here are the ten instructions, appearing in eight modern languages, that don the stones:

1. Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature.
2. Guide reproduction wisely—improving fitness and diversity.
3. Unite humanity with a living new language.
4. Rule passion—faith—tradition—and all things with tempered reason.
5. Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts.
6. Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court.
7. Avoid petty laws and useless officials.
8. Balance personal rights with social duties.
9. Prize truth—beauty—love—seeking harmony with the infinite.
10. Be not a cancer on the earth—Leave room for nature—Leave room for nature.
