From the southern tip of Italy, the heel of the boot as it were, comes Canzonieri Grecanico Salentino ("CGS"). This group has for years kept alive the distinctive sounds of the folk songs and dances of their region, singing in a dialect called Grika which still bears traces of the ancient Greeks who settled there. CGS uses voices and frame drums to bring to life the hard-charging tarantas and tarantellas of southern Italy – dances that have an almost ecstatic, trance-like sound. They also collaborate widely with musicians from West Africa, South Asia, and the UK. The Italian band Canzonieri Grecanico Salentino plays on April 2 at DROM on Avenue A.
