Imagine Captain America with a turban and a long beard.
New York software engineer and cartoonist Vishavjit Singh has been re-creating the patriotic super-hero since 2013, and he is now the subject of a short YouTube documentary.
"Red, White, and Beard" features Singh walking around New York City dressed as Captain America, talking to locals and tourists.
Singh, who is of Indian descent, first dressed as Captain America for photographer Fiona Aboud when she was documenting Sikhs. He got a lot of attention on the streets of Manhattan.
“I was scared. I really thought, I don't know what people are going to think. They might hustle me,” said Singh. "It was exactly the opposite. They loved it, I had just countless people taking photographs with me. Police officers coming, tapping me on my shoulder, saying, 'Hey, hey, can I take a photo for my kids?'”
After the photo shoot, he started getting invitations to universities, museums and comedy shows. Singh, who draws cartoons on Sikh life with cartoons for his website sikhtoons.com, said his goal is to foster a national conversation about what it means to be American.
“I am ready to go to as many places in the US, 50 states, yes, one day,” he said.
He knows it won't be easy. Dressed as himself for a recent ad video for Facebook, Singh got dozens of racist comments.
