Celebrating 50 Years of NYC Landmarks

Sylvan Terrace, Albert Robinson Jr., 1833, Jumel Terrace Historic District, designated 1970

From irrefutable icons—Broadway theaters, Central Park, Carnegie Hall—to lesser-known structures including the Cyclone roller coaster on Coney Island, one hundred street lampposts, and seven cast-iron street clocks throughout the city—much of what makes New York City unique is thanks to the New York City Landmarks Law. Anthony Wood and Claudette Brady celebrate the 50th anniversary of the passage of the Landmarks Law, and a major exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York, in Saving Place: 50 years of New York City Landmarks.
