City Council To Vote On Bill That Would Set Aside Housing for Homeless

The New York City Council is expected to pass a bill that will require developers to set aside housing for the homeless in city-subsidized buildings.

Starting next summer, developers that receive tax abatement and other forms of financial assistance from the city will have to set aside 15 percent of units for the homeless.

The rule will apply to buildings with more than 40 rental units.

The Coalition for the Homeless says requiring any city housing plan to address homelessness is a "game changer." Council Speaker Corey Johnson says the new policy is a "big deal" that will help make a dent in the city’s persistently high homeless population.
