
Instead of reaching the 56,000 people who live in shelters, so far the city has tested just 1,561 under the expanded testing and tracing program, according to the Department of Social Services. Seven percent have tested positive—that's more than four times higher than the citywide average. Advocates say the shared rooms where many single adults were living are especially conducive to the spread of the coronavirus. City officials said they are ramping up testing as more supplies become available.
