For the first time, New York City released a scorecard on the condition of homeless shelters.
In total, there were 21,400 violations across the homeless shelter system at the end of last year. The majority, 70 percent, were in so-called cluster sites, private buildings in which the city rents apartments to house homeless families. That program will be phased out within three years. The city says it plans to address the rest of the violations by investing additional resources into shelters run by non-profits.
“Now we’re going to be pursuing the repair efforts in partnership with the providers by allocating additional resources to address under-investment and maintenance and capital needs,” said Steven Banks, Human Resources Administration Commissioner.
