City’s Plan For Deteriorating BQE Is to Make It Last for 20 More Years

The debate over what to do with the most crumbling part of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway seems to have been settled, for now.

Rather than tear down and rebuild the stacked section of the BQE in Brooklyn Heights, or replace it with a tunnel as the City Council suggested, Mayor de Blasio will postpone that decision for another 20 years.

In the meantime, the city will do what it can to preserve the current double decker highway, by waterproofing and sealing holes, to ensure water isn’t corroding it. To deter oversized trucks from driving illegally on the delicate highway, the city will install an automated system to issue fines.

And the city will use that time to come up with what it calls, a long term vision for that section of the BQE.
