Civil Defense inaugural ceremonies

WNYC announcer Tommy Cowan describes the parade coming into City Hall Plaza for the Department of Defense inaugural ceremonies. Included are many female members of the military and civil defense effort. He describes flag bearer and the marching band. He also speaks of the importance of the Red Cross in the effort.

The National Anthem is played, followed by an announcement of the inauguration of the women of the armed services. Mrs. Oswald Lord is welcomed to the stage, she introduces the Advisory Committee for Women in the Armed Services. Two outstanding women who are aiding in the drive are also introduced: Jinx Falkenburg and Rosalind Russell. Helen Hayes is then welcomed to speak on behalf of the Committee. She speaks of the need to build up American strength.

She speaks of the need for women volunteers to compensate for the labor shortage. 72,000 additional woman are necessary.
Newspapers are thanked for providing advertising space to make the drive for volunteers successful.

Mayor Impellitteri is welcomed to the microphone. He greets the many women volunteers and members of the board, particularly Anna Rosenberg. Impellitteri goes on to discuss the responsibilities of women in the war effort, he notes that women in Israel are required to serve alongside men. Impellitteri calls on the people of New York City to meet the quota to provide their services to their country.

Anna Rosenberg is welcomed to the microphone. She offers the official thanks of the Advisory Committee, she goes on to talk about her experience in Korea, where she saw men from the boroughs fighting. She mentions forty women on the stage who have already pledged to join the armed forces.
Grover Whalen introduces female members of the military, many are directors of nursing and medical corps. Mayor Impellitteri swears in women who have decided to join the military.
