Plastic Straws Will Soon Be Available Only Upon Request

Bars, restaurants, and delis will still have to stock straws. But they'll only be allowed to give them out to customers who ask for them. Eric Goldstein of the Natural Resources Defense Council says it will limit a key revenue source for plastics manufacturers.

"There are many things we have to do to back off on our reliance on climate-altering fossil fuels, but it's another key step down the road," Goldstein told WNYC.

When the bill was first introduced in 2018, it banned plastic straws. But that was put on hold after opposition from disability rights advocates, who argued that some people need straws for medical reasons. The current bill does ban plastic drink stirrers and the "splash guards" that some cafes stick in the lids of to-go coffee cups.
