Commissioner Bratton Says Most Concerning Violence of 2015 was Gun-Related

NYPD Police Commissioner Bill Bratton addresses 822 new police officers at cadet graduation in July 2015.

NYC police commissioner William J. Bratton follows up on yesterday's big report on crime statistics for 2015, calling it the safest year in the modern history of New York City.

"Crime is trending down. Police use of force is trending down. Complaints against police are trending down. So it was a very good picture that we presented yesterday."

One number that saw a significant increase in 2015 was reported rapes, which Bratton attributes to "The Cosby Effect." He explains many people felt empowered to report rapes that had taken place before 2015, which inflated the numbers.

He also cited "young women coming out of clubs and bars by themselves, intoxicated" as a possible reason for the increase in rapes, encouraging women to "adopt a buddy system" when taking cabs or public transportation at night.

What kind of violence is causing the most concern? Shooting crimes, says Bratton. Of the number of murders in 2015, about 60% were from shootings, which is a much higher percentage than before. And a number of these shooting deaths can be attributed to gang violence, another upward trend.
