Composing for Beale Street, NYC During WWII, 'Dumplin'

Academy Award-nominated composer, pianist, and producer, Nicholas Britell, joins us to talk about Barry Jenkins's new film, If Beale Street Could Talk, for which he composed the soundtrack.

 

John Strausbaugh (at 17:45) joins us to discuss his book, Victory City: A History of New York and New Yorkers during World War II. During World War II, New York City wasn't just a place of servicemen, politicians, and war heroes, but also of Nazi, Fascist, and Communist sympathizers.

 

The Netflix film “Dumplin’(at 36:23) will premiere on the platform on December 7. Danielle Macdonald, the film’s star, and the author who wrote the book on which it is based, Julie Murphy, join us to discuss the film. The film is about a teenage, plus sized beauty queen who signs up for her mom’s pageant as a protest that escalates when other contestants follow in her footsteps, revolutionizing the pageant and their small Texas town.
