U.S. Representative Peter King (R-NY3) connects his work in Washington with his constituents in Suffolk County.
When asked what his priorities are with respect to the economy, Congressman King said he wants to make changes to President Obama's healthcare legislation because businesses in his district say they are seeing their premiums go up.
He also said, in some communities in Long Island, unaccompanied minors who crossed the border from Central American countries are now living with families in lower-income communities. He wants to see federal funding for those school districts:
"These children, necessarily, bring problems with them. They’re raised in a different culture. They have different levels of education…And you’re putting them into schools, which is really an extra burden on the schools. And the schools aren’t getting any extra funds to compensate for them. And that’s been a real burden on these school districts."
As for the Trans-Pacific Partnership, Congressman King said he's leaning toward supporting it (because "the more trade we can get, the better" in Long Island), but ultimately he wants to look over the final deal more carefully before taking a stand.
