Cuomo Announces First Phase of Homelessness Plan

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the first phase of his homelessness action plan.

Governor Cuomo is putting his plan for addressing homelessness into action.

The first phase of his $10 billion, five-year plan includes the creation of 1,200 supportive housing units. The governor's office would not say how long that would take or how many would be in New York City.

He'll also created an inter-agency council on homelessness, provide 500 new shelter beds in the city, and strengthen the state’s oversight of shelters. Within three months, the state plans to shut down two city shelters with serious violations. The city will have to find new homes for 270 families.

Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio have repeatedly clashed over the city's homelessness problem. The Mayor said he's happy to see the investment, but the city needs a lot more help.
