De Blasio Continues Victory Lap, Following Primary Win

Mayor Bill de Blasio and First Lady Chirlan McCray thank campaign volunteers in Brooklyn, after de Blasio secured the Democratic nomination for mayor.

Mayor Bill de Blasio continued his victory lap Wednesday, after securing the Democratic nomination for mayor.

He stopped by his campaign headquarters in Brooklyn to thank volunteers and was greeted with applause and cheers from the crowd. He called his primary win an affirmation of his initiatives like universal Pre-K, and promised more proposals in the coming weeks leading up to the Nov. 7 general election.

De Blasio said that on Election Day, voters will have a choice between a progressive Democrat and a "pro-Trump Republican" — his opponent, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis.

"People in this city feel very, very passionately about what's happening not only in this city, but around the country," he said. "This will be an opportunity for them to speak to that."

De Blasio handily defeated his closest rival, Sal Albanese, for the Democratic nomination, with nearly 75 percent of the primary vote.
