Restaurants account for about 40 percent of COVID-19 related layoffs, the most of any industry in New York City. In the state, four out of every five restaurant workers have been laid off since the beginning of the outbreak—more than 527,000 people. Experts say the city’s restaurants have never faced a crisis of this magnitude—especially smaller, immigrant owned ones. And if federal and local governments don't intervene, business closures could have lasting effects on New York.
