Fifty-two people died of COVID-19 in shelters for single adults, according to data released this week. That’s a rate of 300 per 100,000 residents—more than 50% higher than the citywide average. Homeless single adults live in congregate shelters, where eight to twelve people on average share a room. Advocates say that makes social distancing impossible. They've asked the city to move everyone out of these shelters into hotels so they can isolate. City officials say they have so far moved 9,000 people and plan on relocating more.
