Democratic Party leaders are rolling out a new look for their agenda.
“A Better Deal: Better Jobs, Better Wages, Better Future,” which New York Senator Chuck Schumer and Congressman Hakeem Jeffries helped craft, calls for Democratic members of Congress to push for things like cheaper prescription drugs, more crackdowns on corporate monopolies and tax credits for businesses that hire new workers.
The slogan generated a lot of blowback on Twitter, where people derided it as tepid and sounding like a Papa John's ad. But as the Washington Post's Ed O'Keefe points out, it also sounds quite a bit like the Republican Party's agenda last year.
"House Republicans campaigned last year on an agenda called "A Better Way," O'Keefe said. "So really, it's just perhaps Coke and Pepsi here to swing voters."
Democratic Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York defended the slogan, saying he doesn't think the party could make themselves any clearer.
"Middle class families and those who aspire to be part of the middle class are being screwed." he said. "They deserve a better deal."
Reporter Ed O'Keefe wrote about the new plan for the Washington Post. He spoke to WNYC's Richard Hake.
