DOC NYC opens this week with a prodigious slate of non-fiction films from around the world

Filmmaker Margaret Brown's 'Descendant' is among the films screening at DOC NYC this year.

DOC NYC, the country's largest documentary film festival in terms of number of films screened, runs Nov. 9th through 17th on screens and online. The festival includes a wide variety of local, national, and international entries, including Margaret Brown's award-winning "Descendant" (pictured above).

WNYC Morning Edition host Michael Hill spoke with Thom Powers, who's stepping down as the festival's artistic director after 12 years (and who co-hosts WNYC's Documentary of the Week series) about what's in store this year, in theaters around New York City. Powers also explains how viewers can opt to watch festival offerings at home, and what's next for the prestigious series under new leadership.
