Over the years, punk has meant a lot of different things: It’s been about speaking out against the excesses of capitalism and the socio-political status quo; a vehicle to give voice to women on stage and in the crowd. And it’s been an outlet to express anger and angst in a big noisy catharsis. But for Ex Hex, punk can be fun, too.
The latest project of D.C. punk staple Mary Timony (formerly of Autoclave, Helium and supergroup Wild Flag), drummer Laura Harris, and bassist and vocalist Betsy Wright, Ex Hex unleashes taut pop punk bangers and gleefully fast three-chord rockers with an unrelenting enthusiasm equally refreshing and joyful. And in the year and change the band's been around, Ex Hex has very quickly become one of the best live shows around.
Ex Hex recently released its debut, Rips, and the album’s title sorta says it all, right? Ex Hex’s 12 songs really do rip. Practically every second is packed big rock moments: From the sneering guitar riffs (“Beast”) and smile-inducing hooks (“Waste Your Time”) to the fist-pumping choruses (“How You Got That Girl”) and turn-on-a-dime shifts (“Hot And Cold”). It’s an ebullient sound perfect for recklessly hurtling down the highway or dancing at a raucous basement sock hop. It's also the sound of three killer musicians having a blast.
