WNYC Book Festival - Quiz Show

WNYC kicks off a week's worth of programming for WNYC's first annual Festival of Books. They begin with this "Literary quiz" with Clifton Fadiman as moderator. Panelists include book reviewer for the New York Times Charles Poore, professor of philosophy at Columbia University and author Irwin Edman, paired together as "the critics" and author and critic Alfred Kazin and "authoress" Jan Struther, who compete as "the authors".

Sy Siegel begins the broadcast by expressing the responsibilities of WNYC and how the New York City Festival of Books fits into its mandate. He discusses the role of New York as a publishing hub and the meaning books can and should have for the people of New York.

Mayor Vincent R. Impellitteri speaks of New York's role in the world, particularly in the publishing world.

Siegal introduces the Chairman of the Committee on Reading Development of the Book Publisher's Council, Harold Ginsburg. Ginsburg credits "the remarkable nature of the world of books" epitomized by the New York Public Library, and the Library's importance in the City of New York.

Siegel introduces the panel for today's quiz: author, critic, and moderator of the broadcast, Clifton Fadiman, book reviewer for the New York Times Charles Poore, professor of philosophy at Columbia University and author Irwin Edmun, author and critic Alfred Kazin, and "authoress" Jan Struther.

They pit Charles Poore and Irwin Edman (the critics) against Jan Struther and Alfred Kazin (the authors).

Question themes, in order:
1. name titles that include the names of 5 boroughs.
2. name the full title of a work by its subtitle.
3. associate phrases with characters from famous works.
4. identify opening lines of famous works...
5. ...followed by the last lines of famous works.
6. cookbooks - the panelists must guess the author based by the title.
7. guess, based on the villain they vanquished, the name of the hero and title of the book they appeared in.
8. guess the author based on their famous detective.
9. guess the books and occupations of characters from Sinclair Lewis novels.
10 &11. link iconic liquors, and then foods, to the works in which they appear and the authors of those works.
12. based on the middle names of modern authors, guess the full name of the author.
13. guess the names of famous detectives based on their love interests.
14. name famous detectives based on interesting traits.
15. name characters based on their descriptions in the texts in which they originally appear.

The quiz show ends with a decisive victory by the critics' team.
