There are fewer homeless people on New York City’s streets, but more in the subway system, according to the results of the latest federally-mandated survey.
The survey, conducted overnight in January, found that 3,588 homeless New Yorkers live on streets and subways. Overall, that's a slight decrease of 2 percent compared to last year.
But the number of people on subways — 2,178 —increased by 23 percent.
City officials said that the increase in homeless people on subways was a reflection of the survey being taken on a particularly cold night. They also said they've expanded their outreach efforts, but it takes five months on average to convince people to come into shelters.
The vast majority of homeless people, currently 58,007, live in city shelters.
