Fines Coming to Big Trucks on the BQE

Starting Monday, extremely large trucks that drive on the BQE could receive a fine of up to $7,000

Trucks that weigh more than 80,000 pounds are already restricted from driving on the BQE. At least, they're supposed to be. But a new report from the city says about 11 percent of the highway's truck traffic exceeds the weight limit. Now, in an effort to halt rapidly deteriorating conditions on the crumbling highway, the NYPD will begin enforcing weight restrictions.

Kendra Hems is president of the Trucking Association of New York and some of her drivers have permits to be on the road, and forcing them off will create a new set of problems.

"They would prefer to stay on quickest route and that's going to be staying on the interstate vs trying to navigate city streets," Hem said.

The mayor says repairs on the BQE will begin this spring.
