Street Crimes Have Fallen Across New York City During the Pandemic

While New York City struggles through the Covid-19 pandemic, a small bit of good news — overall, street crime is dropping. In the three weeks following New York City's declaration of a state of emergency, index crimes dropped 20 percent.

Candace McCoy, a criminal justice professor at the City of New York Graduate Center, says the decline may have to do with people staying at home. "Victims are not the street, and perpetrators are not on the street. Everybody is inside waiting out this virus," she said.
