Former Commissioner Bill Bratton Looks Back

Former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton

Former NYPD Commissioner William Bratton served under both Mayors Bill de Blasio and Rudolph Giuliani, and in between led efforts to reform police departments in Los Angeles and Boston. In the early 1990s, his controversial “broken windows” approach to policing was often credited with reducing crime in New York City, but some critics said it targets communities of color. Now, he's out with a new book, The Profession, written with Peter Knobler, and he spoke with WNYC's Morning Edition host Michael Hill about why he still stands by that strategy, what he thinks about the movement to defund police, and his thoughts on marijuana legalization.
