Police are still searching for a fifth suspect involved in the alleged gang rape of an 18-year-old woman at a playground in Brownsville, Brooklyn Thursday night.

Four suspects are now in custody, two of whom surrendered to authorities. Police said the men approached the woman and her father, pointed a gun at him, and told him to leave, then took turns raping the woman. When the father returned with two police officers, the men had already fled.

The woman has been treated and released from the hospital, but the attack has left the community reeling.

Councilwoman Inez Barron, who represents the area, said there's shock in Brownsville about the violent incident, as well as concern over the amount of time it took to hear any information about it.

"This event happened on a Thursday evening," she said. "Word of this event didn't get widely circulated, neither by the media nor the police, until Saturday. So they're very much concerned about that."

She also took Police Commissioner Bill Bratton to task for advocating for the "buddy system," especially for women walking alone late at night, a suggestion that has drawn its share of criticism.

"The fact that she was not alone, and still this happened, sort of takes the air out of advancing the theory that a buddy system would in fact reduce this kind of crime," Barron said.

She said she's asking the mayor to allocate more funding to violence prevention programs, as well as community centers and similar programs that create supervised, safe alternatives for teens. Barron also wants brighter lighting in Osborne Park, where the attack occurred.

Police said charges are pending against the 14-year-old, 17-year-old, and two 15-year-old suspects in custody.

In this interview, WNYC's Richard Hake talks with Barron about the attack and how the community is responding.
