TOPIC ONE: Free Speech, Equality & Democracy
Is the left now the enemy of the First Amendment? First Amendment lawyer Floyd Abrams recently penned an article for "Columbia Journalism Review" titled "Look Who's Trashing the First Amendment," pointing at the left for attempting to censor free speech through campaign finance reform, political correctness, and limiting of some commercial advertisements. Host Brian Lehrer discusses who gets to decide what's free or restricted speech with Abrams, a partner at Cahill, Gordon and Reindel and a visiting professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Owen Fiss, a professor at Yale Law School and author of "The Irony of Free Speech" and "Liberalism Divided," Wendy Kaminer, President of the National Coalition Against Censorship, and Cass Sunstein, law professor at the University of Chicago and author of "Free Markets and Justice."
TOPIC TWO: Media Literacy
A look at how can kids be taught to think critically about the many hours of TV they watch and the countless commercial messages that target them. Brian talks to Bob McCannon of the New Mexico Media Literacy Project, a program that teaches media literacy to children.
