Muslim, gay and lesbian, Latino and women's groups came together in New York Thursday for a conversation about religion and sexual identity in light of the Orlando attack.
"To LGBT people who are not Muslim, this is the time for us to examine the level of Islamaphobia that is rooted within our communities," said Faisal Alam with the Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity.
Kristen Rouse, a lesbian from Orlando, said the attack has highlighted racism within the gay community. And she said there's no excuse for it.
"We are a community that is suffering backlash right now, politically," she said. "It is not helpful for us to then displace hatred onto another community that is also struggling to be seen as equal Americans."
