Mayor Robert F. Wagner speaks. Welcomes attendees. Always a great thrill to participate in these ceremonies. Great thanks to the committee and Pope's father for founding the awards to repay this country and help others; he also talks about the NYC education system. There is room for improvement, but things here are pretty good despite what you may read in the press. He talks about CCNY, Hunter College, Brooklyn College and Queens College as producers of Woodrow Wilson Scholars/Fellows over the years. Many come from NYC high schools. Our youngsters have a great opportunity for education, and many seize that opportunity. Winners will make contributions to the city and the world in the years ahead. The world is more difficult from year to year, but I am confident that the young people here will make a difference. The Mayor wishes the winners good luck.
Fortune Pope calls the students up for their awards. There follows the Sanitation Band playing God Bless America. Applause. WNYC announcer recap and outro over band music. "We return you now to our studios in the Municipal Building."
