While the motivations that led the founding of these that led to the founding of these scholarships remain the same the need for them as well as other forms of assistance for higher education has become greater than ever. To the graduates who are being honored today I want to say that you have every reason to be proud of your achievements the educational standards of the New York City schools around them are among the highest in the country. And receiving your award today you will be joining and I could to an academic procession of many of the fine young men and women who have won them in previous years. The tremendous responsibility of providing educational opportunities in New York City rests with the Board of Education. Since the school population in our city is probably the most the first of diversified to be found anywhere in the world we are fortunate that our Board of Education is composed of such highly qualified and sincerely dedicated public servants we have very pleased to have with us today the president of the New York City Board of Education is highly respected as one of them foremost proponents of a strong ABOL and comprehensive public education program ladies and gentlemen this is my privilege to present to you at this time the honorable James B. First of all let me congratulate the winners of these scholarships and their families you have every reason to be very proud of what you've accomplished during the last four years where I may say the warm cooperation of the city administration we have reorganized and revitalized the public school system in this city. To the extent that as of today. My judgement we have the New York City the finest public school system of any large urban community in the United States. To those of you will have won the scholarships I plead with you on that rather than rest on your laurels that you take this as the opportunity to go forward and now climb the maximum formal education that you can These are the years when you can afford the self-discipline hard study on which all learning is based and I urge you that you take advantage of the years ahead and I know that we will have every reason to be as proud of you in your performance in the future as we are proud of you today thank you. Seven of the first ten high schools producing these scholars in the future right in New York City in our education system here sometimes these things are overlooked and I think it's good to point them out that youngsters I think god given a great opportunity for an education and so many of them which is more important seize that opportunity so that they can prepare themselves for the years ahead and I know that as we see these fine young men and women. Receive these very valuable awards they're going to take full advantage of the opportunity to give themselves the training so that they can make a contribution to this city and to this country to the world in the is ahead but also to. The satisfaction a good education brings to oneself allows one to appreciate so many. Fine things here in our country and in the world and as I've said on other occasions I'm not one of those people who says fails that after our generation the world is going to come to an end the world is more difficult as we know from year to year and I am confident that as we see represented here the young people of this city and of this country are going to do a better job than we could ever hope to do because they have had the advantage of more of them have had an advantage of fine and good education and of cause one of the principal factors in that opportunity given to so many of our youngsters here has been the work of Fortune pope and the Columbus Day Committee citizens committee So again good luck and I know that in the years ahead.
