Wide open vocals and far away guitars trickle through the poignant songwriting of Tony Dekker, front man of Great Lake Swimmers. In their latest and sixth release, A Forest of Arms, the Toronto band mix their signature haunting melodies with a fuller and brighter sound. Dekker's voice still occupies the lonesome, drifting space it has for the last twelve years but it's in the recording process where the band explores new territory.
Grain silos, old churches and other unconventional spaces have been host to their recordings, letting natural sounds manifest in their homespun folk. "Don't Leave Me Hanging," for example, off of their latest release was recorded in the Tyendinaga Cavern and Caves in Tyendinaga, Ontario. Reverberations and circling bats contribute to the forlorn and pensive sound of Great Lake Swimmers.
