A Greek Mayor Welcomes Refugees

Thessaloniki Mayor Yiannis Boutaris (centre) is among few Greek politicians to openly recognize the contribution of Greek Jews to making Thessaloniki a flourishing metropolis.

Yiannis Boutaris, the current mayor of Thessaloniki, discusses Greece's role in accepting refugees from ailing countries.

Boutaris, who was chosen as 'The Best Mayor of the World' for the month of October by the City Mayors Foundation in 2012, said these refugees are not just Greece's problem but Europe's problem. And these Syrian refugees, who did not choose war, shouldn't be punished for the repercussions.

When asked about Trump, Mayor Boutaris said he hasn't been following the election very closely, but offered this thought: "I think he's an animal. If the United States elects Trump as president, it will be a big, big disappointment for my eyes, because I have a good idea of American democracy."
