Harlem Retail Market Dedication

New York Mayor Robert F. Wagner at the dedication of the new home of the Fashion Institute of Technology on May 4, 1959.

At the Harlem Retail Market Dedication, Commissioner of the Department of Markets, Anthony Masciarelli, introduces several public officials who say a few words in support of the project and urban renewal in general. The Harlem Retail Market replaced an open air market frequented by pushcart vendors.

Borough President of Manhattan, Hulan Jack, praises the $635,000 project for expected improvements to the community, "...traffic conditions improve, streets become cleaner, merchants dress up their storefronts, and housewives are assured real take home value when purchasing the necessary commodities to grace the dining table." He asserts that this facility will foster a "competitive, healthy spirit in business circles" and that "government has no right to go into business except where it can serve as a yardstick to benefit the public welfare."

Construction Coordinator, Robert Moses, requests that citizens have patience with city officials while they "rebuild the city of New York."

Deputy Commissioner of Public Works, Henry C. Gaffney, adds his congratulations while commenting on the benefits of building public spaces.

Robert F. Wagner thanks those who were involved in the planning process as "another example of the cooperation between private citizens and their government" to improve standards of living.
