Hochul drops mask mandates for schools Wednesday, Adams will wait a few more days

Governor Kathy Hochul is lifting the state's indoor mask mandate for schools starting Wednesday. But WNYC's Stephen Nessen reports, New York City students, will have to wait a little longer.

Hochul says she’s dropping the mask mandate inside schools due to a combination of factors. Covid positivity rates statewide, are less than 2 percent. And they’ve dropped by 98 percent since the Omicron peak in early January. Vaccination rates are some of the highest in the nation.

But Mayor Adams says he'll decide on Friday whether to drop the city's public school's indoor mask mandate--as well as the requirement to show proof of vaccination at indoor venues. Both could go into effect, on March 7th.

Masks are still required on mass transit, in hospitals and nursing homes, as well as in shelters.
