The hotel workers' union is getting into politics in a new way. A unique provision they negotiated this year for their members in suburban New York City, upstate New York and Northern New Jersey will likely boost voter participation in next month's election.
The contract allows members of the Hotel Trades Council to register at their workplaces. Four hundred have done that in the past few weeks, according to union officials. Workers are also allowed to take up to four hours paid leave on Election Day to go and vote.
“It is our hope that hotel workers and casino workers will really be able to show up at the polls and have their voices heard in a way that's never happened before,” said Richard Maroko, the union’s executive vice president and legal counsel.
The union is also hoping to include these provisions in future contracts.
