Hudson County is ending its detention contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. To avoid layoffs in the wake of up to $35 million in revenue loss, the county's correctional facility is exploring other ways to bring in money.
Director Ron Edwards said they're considering a job corp program for state and federal prison inmates who are about to be released in Hudson County.
"Kind of like a one-stop," he said, "we'll help them with high school diplomas, literacy, and life skills like medical insurance and housing vouchers." He said the new program would make prison inmates more confident in their return to the community, and in turn would make their communities safer.
He also said the jail, one of the only New Jersey county facilities with an inpatient drug treatment program, will open up to other counties that want to send their inmates living with drug addiction.
The facility's ICE contract is scheduled to phase out completely by 2020.
