Hundreds of demonstrators and elected officials gathered in Federal Plaza on Saturday amidst an alarming number of bias incidents and attacks against Asian New Yorkers.
The event, called Rally to Rise Up Against Asian Hate, was organized by the Asian American Federation. Speakers included Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Rep. Grace Meng as well as Noel Quintana, a Filipino-American man who was slashed in the face while riding the subway in early February.
“I called for help but nobody came for help,” said Quintana, who pulled down his mask to speak, revealing the deep scar his attacker left, stretching from ear to ear, across his face. “There were a lot of New Yorkers there. And I never knew that nobody would help me in this kind of instance.”
Many Asian Americans who attended the rally said they were now afraid to leave their homes.
