The new HBO Max documentary "On The Record" alleges hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons sexually harassed and raped multiple women. One of those women, Sherri Hines, has been telling her story for years—first in a novelized memoir published in 2008, and again several years ago, when she came forward and publicly accused Simmons of rape.
The film had a troubled path to the screen. It was originally going to air on Apple's streaming service and Oprah Winfrey had signed on as executive producer. After an intense campaign by Simmons, Oprah pulled out of the project, citing creative differences with the directors, who are both white. The film eventually premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
Hines told WNYC's Jami Floyd the premiere was the first time she saw the documentary. At first, she was shaken seeing herself on screen, but she says overall it's been a healing experience.
"I finally faced the giant, and it's a relief," Hines said. "And it's for me."
Hines hopes the documentary will help encourage other women of color to step forward with their own stories.
