This list of names is familiar now: Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, Philando Castile. These are just a few of the high profile deaths of African American men and boys by law enforcement.
But the 2015 death of Sandra Bland, a 28-year-old woman found hanged in her jail cell after being arrested during a traffic stop in Texas, illustrates what some say are the long-hidden acts of police violence against women of color, which are not often as fatal but can often be brutal and grossly under-reported.
Andrea Ritchie has been studying police violence against women of color for more than two decades and has compiled an extensive database documenting incidents of police violence against women of color. She’s a police misconduct attorney and author of the new published book, “Invisible no More: Police Violence Against Black Women and Women of Color.”
