Goldwater and Humphrey: The Also-Rans of the Sixties

American politician US Senator Barry Goldwater (1909 - 1998) waves to supporters during his Presidential campaign, Prescott, Arizona, September 3, 1964.

The second installment of our Also-Rans political series looks at the careers and legacies of 1960s presidential hopefuls Barry Goldwater and Hubert Humphrey. One, a loud, rabble-rousing ideologue who lost the election but left the Republican Party very different than when he found it. The other proved to be an embattled liberal-turned-party-regular whose tin ear and old-fashioned values got drowned in radical passion.

Princeton history professor Julian Zelizer joins us to talk about the almost-Presidents of the 1960's. He’s the author of The Presidency of George W. Bush: A First Historical Assessment and The Fierce Urgency of Now: Lyndon Johnson, Congress, and the Battle for the Great Society.
