Kousha Navidar: This is All Of It on WNYC. I'm Kousha Navidar. And you know, whenever we get to the final segment of our Friday show, we probably start to get an itch for the weekend. A weekend in our area during the dog days of summer can be a special time. Lucky for us, it looks like the weather forecast is going to be pretty promising. At least that's how it looks so far. So maybe you could head to the beach or up park or a day trip somewhere or that restaurant you've been wanting to try. Or maybe you're going to go to a museum or spend time with friends or family.
There's a lot that you could do this weekend, so I want some suggestions. What do you recommend I do in the city this weekend? Or what do you recommend listeners do in this city this weekend? What are you doing that you want to share with us? Call or text us now at 212-433-9692. That's 212-433-WNYC, 212-433-9692. Or you can hit us up on Instagram or on X, our handle is @allofitwnyc.
Are there any events you want to shout out that your fellow listeners should consider checking out? Or how do you like to enjoy New York, especially during this time of year? 212-433-9692, that's 212-433-WNYC. While we screen your calls, let's hear a bit about what team All Of It is up to this weekend. We can start with what I'm up to. I am going to the Renaissance Faire in Tuxedo Park tomorrow. The Faire describes itself as a rollicking romp through Elizabethan England, set within the Majestic Groves of Sterling Forest.
There are jousts, there are costumes, there's magic shows, turkey legs, basically many of my favorite things. I went for the first time last year. This year, my wife and I and some friends are wearing costumes. Huzzah. I hope that it will be a great time. I'm sure that it will be. What are you up to this weekend? Give us a call. Send us a text. 212-433-WNYC. That's 212-433-9692.
We've got some texts coming in. This is from Annie. It says, "Free movie night on the Intrepid tonight, which is the huge ship, which is wonderful." We've also got a text. "I'm looking forward to seeing the dark comedy Bringer of Doom at the Players Theatre. So a lot of theater there. We've also got Peter in Queens. Hey, Peter, what are you up to this weekend?
Peter: I'm going to see my friend perform in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night in Woodstock. It's outdoor and it's free. It's this weekend and next weekend as well.
Kousha Navidar: Oh, wonderful. Peter, what role is your friend playing?
Peter: I don't actually know. I've never seen Twelfth Night. But she's amazing, she's got like the lead.
Kousha Navidar: Oh, very cool. Are you a fan of Shakespeare?
Peter: I'm a fan of Shakespeare and I'm a fan of hers.
Kousha Navidar: Oh, wonderful. That's great. What better reason to get you out into theater than to support a friend? We hope that Twelfth Night is fun for you. I'm sure that it will be. Let's see, we've got senior producer Kate Hinds is going to the Ramanessin Brook in Holmdel, New Jersey. It's a rich site that contains some of the best-preserved fossil specimens in all of the East Coast.
Many fossilized shark teeth that date back to the Cretaceous period nearly 70 million years ago when New Jersey was covered by 200 feet of ocean water. Yes, that's right, 200 feet. Our very own Nancy Solomon did a radio feature story on it eleven years ago for WNYC and Kate has wanted to go and search for fossilized shark teeth ever since. So that's pretty awesome.
We've got some more text coming in here. It says, "This weekend, I have three walking tours with Municipal Art Society and the Shorewalkers on Saturday at Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, and two on Sunday, Sheepshead Bay beach walk and swim, then jazz lovers tour of Harlem in the evening." So that sounds like a big meaty weekend there. Got another text here that says, "Celebrating Rob and Eleanor's wedding at Giando's in Dumbo." Oh, that's wonderful. Congrats to Rob and Eleanor. That's wonderful.
I think that we might have the Nancy clip. Maybe we can get that up in a second. But let's see what else is going. We've also got producer L. Malik Anderson, who is a proud alumni of the University of Wisconsin Madison. He was asked to host a Badger meet-up at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, for Wisconsin graduates who live in New York and in New Jersey. So it's safe to say that Malik will be riding roller coasters and eating funnel cake this Saturday. We've got another caller in right now. We've got Renzo in Newark. Renzo, hey, welcome to the show.
Renzo: Nice to meet you, Kousha. By the grace of the Lord, I found this program while you were talking about songs about my New York. I was born-- I love saying that. I hope you know where this is. I was born 50 blocks from Shea Stadium.
Kousha Navidar: Really? Shea Stadium, 50 blocks. Is that part of what your weekend plans are?
Renzo: No, my friend, I'm calling because it's-- I'm Catholic, of course, I am a United States Navy captain, retired after 30 years of service. I'm working today over here, my last year in North Airport. Tomorrow is the procession of Santa Rosa de Lima, St. Rose of Lima, the first Catholic saint of the Americas, including Africa, Asia, and [unintelligible 00:05:48]. Tomorrow, it's been there for 50 years plus from St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan. So I'm inviting everyone, even if you're not Catholic, just pay a little respect to Santa Rosa de Lima.
Kousha Navidar: Is there a part of the event that you're especially looking forward to, Renzo?
Renzo: Yes. To remember my dear mom, who's in heaven, and my father as well. We have participated, I think, since I was maybe 31 years old. Tomorrow, I'll be carrying. I'm one of the carriers. So there are 200 in total, and we take places. 50 yards. 50 yards. We go around it. The cathedral of our New York. That's what it is to celebrate her. The first saint of all the three Americas, brother.
Kousha Navidar: Wonderful. That's wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing that with us, Renzo, and for giving that shout-out. We really appreciate it. Listeners, we're taking your calls and texts to hear what you're doing this weekend. What are things that you think I should be doing or listeners? Give us a call. Send us a text. We're at 212-433-9692. That's 212-433-WNYC. Or you can hit us up on our social channels on Instagram and X. We're @allofitwnyc.
I love hearing all of the wide variety of things that are happening, and especially the stories behind them. Renzo, the story that you just shared, we just appreciate that so much. It's so nice to be able to feel like we're a part of a larger community here. Let's go to some more callers. We've got Phil in Ossining, New York. Phil, hey, welcome to the show. What are you up to this weekend?
Phil: Hey, thanks for taking my call. My son and I are going to watch The Murder of Roger Ackroyd at Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival in Garrison tonight, which has been going on. They have three different shows, and all of them great. I've enjoyed them all at least once. So that's on tonight's menu. Also, I just want to give a quick shout-out to New York Morning by Elbow. Really worth listening to. That's a good New York anthem.
Kousha Navidar: Oh, from our last segment, you're saying, Phil?
Phil: Yes, from the last segment. Yes.
Kousha Navidar: Wonderful.
Phil: I was a little late on the update.
Kousha Navidar: No, not at all. We appreciate that. It's all a part of the New York community, so we hope that you have fun at those performances, and thank you so much for calling in. Got some texts here that I'd love to read. Here's a text. Watermelon lovers alert. Okay, so this is for me. This unique cultural, food and music event is taking place all Sunday afternoon, August 25, 2:00 to 6:00 PM at Lefferts Historic House, which is inside of Prospect Park of Flatbush.
Got another text here that says, "Looking forward to a ferry ride from Manhattan to Queens for MoMA PS1 show, a vibrant, beautiful work by the Filipina American artist Pacita Abad." And then we've got another text that says, "Major Owens Community Center Street Fair. So that's at 1561 Bedford Ave in Brooklyn. It's between Union and President. It's one block from the Eastern Parkway." Again, that's Major Owens Community Center Street Fair. Our phones are blowing up, so let's go to some folks. We got Barbara in New Jersey. Hey, Barbara, welcome to the show.
Barbara: Thank you. How are you?
Kousha Navidar: I'm good, thanks. How are you? You ready for the weekend?
Barbara: Oh, boy. Well, we're getting ready to move our son in on Monday, so weekend to the Manhattan School of Music for his first year of college.
Kousha Navidar: Congratulations. That is so exciting. And it sounds like there might be some box lifting in your future. Is that fair to say?
Barbara: Fox lifting?
Kousha Navidar: Lifting boxes to get into the dorm room.
Barbara: Oh, yes, lifting boxes. We're going to be lifting boxes, that's for sure. It's kind of scary, though, because it's his first time living in the city and we're going to miss him, but we're excited for all he's going to do there.
Kousha Navidar: That's wonderful. Well, congratulations to your son. Best of luck on the first semester. You're in New Jersey. It's just a car ride or PATH train away. So congrats again. We hope that you have a good lifting form and that the whole move is very seamless. Let's go to David in East Harlem. Hey, David, welcome to the show.
David: Hey, thanks for having me. Something I did last weekend, but it is good for all weekends because it's permanent. We went up to the Adirondacks, to a little town called Schroon Lake, which is off the beaten track of the Adirondacks, so it doesn't have all the crowds of Lake George. But the point of going there was in Ticonderoga, New York, of all places, a gentleman has gotten the blueprints from the original Star Trek set, the original Star Trek Desilu series, and he's recreated it identical to what it was on the TV show. You get toured around, and I wore a Star Trek shirt and completely dorked out on the whole thing, but you don't have to. It's a permanent exhibit and costs about $20. From New York, it was about a four-and-a-half-hour drive, so it's not longer than a day trip, but it's a beautiful place to stay.
Kousha Navidar: David, so you're saying they recreated the set of the Enterprise, or of the NCC?
David: Of the Enterprise. It's a full, you walk through it.
Kousha Navidar: Wait, so of the NCC-1701-E, which was the original, I believe, from the first Star Trek?
David: That's correct, yes.
Kousha Navidar: Wow.
David: It's captain, the William Shatner. Shatner goes there twice a year and the only seat you're able to sit in is the captain's chair on the bridge. There's Kirk's quarters, there's sickbay, there's the engine room, there's the Jeffrey's tube.
Kousha Navidar: That sounds so cool. David, thank you so much for sharing that. We got to put a pin on it just for time, but that is very cool. I would love to go see that. Let's go to Jake in Larchmont. Hey, Jake, welcome to the show.
Jake: Hi. How's it going?
Kousha Navidar: Good. What are your plans this weekend?
Jake: So, on the 25th in Mamaroneck, Walter's Hot Dogs is having a hot dog eating contest. They've been open for 105 years, and so they're just celebrating that anniversary.
Kousha Navidar: Have you ever participated in a hot dog eating contest, Jake?
Jake: I have not, but I managed to sign up and get selected for this one.
Kousha Navidar: Oh, so you're a competitor?
Jake: Now I am, yes. In this instance, I am, yes.
Kousha Navidar: Wow. Jake, good luck. Bring some Pepto Bismol. I hope that your form is great. It'll be a lot of fun. Let's go to Jill in Warren, New Jersey. Hey, Jill, welcome to the show.
Jill: On Saturday, I am going to Island Beach State Park to celebrate my birthday. And the day before, I'm going to Ocean Grove, New Jersey, which is an island resort, Victorian, beautiful. Island Beach rivals any beach in the world, and I've been to a lot of places.
Kousha Navidar: Wonderful. Jill, thank you so much for that. Let's go to Josh in Brooklyn. Hey, Josh, what do you got going on this weekend? Hey, Josh, are you there? Can you hear us? I think we might have some difficulty getting Josh on the line, which is totally fine. Whatever you're doing, Josh, we hope that you're having fun. Got a couple more. Oh, we got Eli in Astoria, however. Hey, Eli, what are you up to this weekend?
Eli: Hey, I am the owner of Tikkun Barbecue, where a smash burger barbecue pop-up that does a lot of free events for our neighborhood since the pandemic when it started on my balcony. This weekend on 31st Avenue, open streets in Astoria, which is again 31st Avenue between 34th and 35th, we are smoking ribs, chicken, and hot dogs giving away for free. And then at eight o'clock, our friends at Astoria Horror Club are screening a free movie as well for the neighborhood, and it's going to be Poltergeist. You have to bring a chair, but otherwise everything else is free.
Kousha Navidar: Oh, wonderful. Getting into that Halloween festivities a little bit early. Eli, thanks so much for calling in. Got a lot of texts here. I'm going to read them quick as we wrap up today's show. "I am working in Coney Island this weekend. I think the film The Warriors will be screened on the beach Saturday night. I've never seen the film, though many consider it a classic.
Here's a nice text from Elena in Windsor Terrace. It says, "Going out on the Delaware for canoeing and kayaking for some sun, sport and clean air and nature. A day away from concrete. Can't wait." We hope you have a great time, Elena. And then we have a text here. I'll wrap up the show with this. We have a text that says, "Hi, Kousha, may I join you at the Renaissance Faire tomorrow? Your mom." Yes, Mom, if you want to make the drive down from Albany, we'll be happy. Costumes required.
Thank you all so much for calling in and letting us know what you're up to. That's it for All Of It today. Coming up on Monday, we'll talk about how in television, everything old is new again. Shows like The Office are gaining new audiences. So we'll talk about this trend and take some of your calls from your comfort TV shows. Thanks so much for hanging out with us. A pleasure as always. Have a great weekend. We'll see you on Monday.
