Massive Dirt Pile Still Haunts New Jersey Residents

A mountain of trash and debris has haunted the neighbors of a quiet residential street in Vernon for the last six years.

There's contaminated dirt, septic pipes and even old toilets piled eight stories high -- just yards away from people's homes.

The man charged with running the illegal dump in his own backyard was finally forced to stop adding to it last year after he was charged for breaking local laws. A municipal judge sentenced him to jail for 30 days, but he's appealed the decision.

Congressman Josh Gottheimer says he's trying to secure federal dollars to help clean up the site as soon as possible.
