Matt Taibbi On The Death - & Life - Of Eric Garner

The July 17, 2014 video of Eric Garner's death on a Staten Island sidewalk at the hands of a police officer was seen by millions, and the circumstances around his death became part of a national conversation around policing in America and accountability. After his death, Garner's last words "I can't breathe" became a rallying cry for the Black Lives Movement, and the officer who placed him in what has been described as an illegal chokehold was not indicted by a grand jury. Contributing editor to Rolling Stone and author Matt Taibbi explores the death and life of Eric Garner in his latest book I Can't Breathe: A Killing on Bay Street. Taibbi looks not only at the circumstances around Garner's death, but also the conditions that made the tragedy possible, including issues around policing, mass incarceration, the underground economy, and racial disparity in law enforcement.
Matt Taibbi will appear at Random House's Big Ideas Night (Random House, 1745 Broadway between W 55 and 56th St.) on Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. The conversation and Q&A will start at 6:30 p.m. He will sign books beginning at 7:30 p.m.
