More Subway Tunnel Repairs and Closures To Come

Water in "Cranberry Tube" that connects the A & C between Brooklyn and Manhattan

Just when you started to enjoy the return of the R Train tunnel between Manhattan and Brooklyn, the Cranberry Tube is getting ready for repairs. The Cranberry Tube connects Manhattan to Brooklyn, and carries 230,000 passengers each day on the A or C Train.

Nine subway tubes that took on water during Sandy, and now that repairs on the R and G lines are completed, the Cranberry Tube is likely next, although the MTA wouldn't confirm an exact start date.

"It is likely going to be on weekends, likely going to start next spring," said MTA spokesman Adam Lisberg. "And it is unlikely that we'll have to do full shut downs."

The tube takes its name from the street near where the tunnel resurfaces in Brooklyn: Cranberry Street in Brooklyn Heights, not far from Pineapple Street and Orange Street, in the micro-neighborhood known as the "Fruit Streets."
