Mormons are not buying what Donald Trump is selling.

Even though Mormons are the most reliably Republican religious group in the country, it's been clearly demonstrated that Trump does very poorly with Mormon voters, says Buzzfeed News senior political writer (and Mormon) McKay Coppins.

Coppins, also the author of The Wilderness: Deep Inside the Republican Party's Combative, Contentious, Chaotic Quest to Take Back the White House (Little, Brown and Company, 2015), says that's partly because of Trump's immigration rhetoric.

The Mormon church has long lobbied for "compassionate immigration reform," and Mormons are twice as likely as Evangelicals to say that the U.S. needs more immigrants, said Coppins. 

Many Mormons are also aligning themselves against Trump's anti-Muslim rhetoric. Coppins said this might have to do with the religion's history of persecution and a sense of familiarity with the plight of Muslims and especially Muslim immigrants.

Coppins went on to discuss the upcoming Idaho primary and Utah caucus.
