MTA Blames Failure Sunday Night On Numerous Missteps of Its Own Making

Eight subway lines were shutdown for several hours Sunday night, after a power interruption. Early reports point to a failure at the MTA as the source of the problem.

When Con-Ed had a voltage issue around 8:30pm Sunday night, many parts of the city saw a brief dip in power. At the MTA, this kickstarted two battery powered generators.

Con-Ed power quickly returned to normal, and the MTA should’ve returned to using regular power too, but it didn’t. Instead, it remained on battery power, until that ran out of juice 45 minutes later.

While the trains didn’t lose power, displays at the Rail Control Center, which monitors train movements did, as did the signal system. So trains had to be halted, and riders evacuated.

Governor Kathy Hochul is calling for an independent review of the incident to ensure it doesn't happen again.
