The subways broke a week-day ridership record for the first time since the wave of Omicron cases hit the city. The MTA clocked 3 million riders on Tuesday.
That’s a good sign for the agency, which has seen ridership numbers down for two years now.
Still, 3 million is only about half of pre-pandemic levels. In April 2020, the MTA was offering full service, for only 300,000 people.
Ridership is higher now, but the agency has had to rely on the federal government to cover its losses with $16 billion in relief.
While many people haven’t returned to the office, the MTA hopes they’ll still use the subway for getting around. And many are, weekend ridership is now up to about 60 percent of what it was before the pandemic.
