MTA Reveals Doomsday Plan if Feds Don’t Deliver on $12B in Relief

The MTA is preparing a budget that includes major service cuts, layoffs and fare hikes if it doesn't receive federal aid soon. It needs $12 billion to get through this year and next and only the U.S. government has that kind of money.

Ridership losses and coronavirus related expenses have blown bowling ball sized holes in the budget.

MTA Chairman Pat Foye says its up to the U.S. Senate to get the money.

“If they fail to do so, horrendous choices lie ahead," he said.

In November the agency will present the board with saving cuts that could include a 40 percent reduction in subway and bus service. And a 50 percent cut in commuter rail service. There would also be fare hikes, and thousands of layoffs.
