Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the U.S. presidential election took a critical step forward today.

President Trump’s former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, has turned himself in to the FBI. Manafort and his former business associate Rick Gates have been charged on 12 mostly financial-related charges that range from conspiracy against the United States, to acting as an unregistered foreign agent, and more.

The charges come five months into special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible connections between Trump campaign officials and the Russian government.

Today it was also revealed that George Papadopoulos, one of Trump’s more junior foreign policy advisers early on in his campaign, plead guilty to lying to the FBI about contact with a Russian professor with ties to Kremlin officials.

Where will Robert Mueller's investigation head next? Jennifer Rodgers, executive director of the Center for the Advancement of Public Integrity at Columbia Law School and a former federal prosecutor, answers.

Andrea Bernstein, special projects editor for public radio station WNYC, published an investigation into Manafort's eyebrow-rasing real estate deals back in March. She explains how his property's in New York City relate to today's indictments.
