Murphy's Testing Plan Will Prioritize Hardest-Hit Communities

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy wants to prioritize COVID-19 testing for the state's most vulnerable communities.

Murphy rolled out his plan on Monday to test more people in communities of color like Newark, Paterson and Trenton that have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. That means rolling out mobile testing units, testing in houses of worship and hiring a diverse group of contact tracers.

Montclair State University epidemiologist Stephanie Silvera says it's still unclear how the state will allocate resources for municipalities.

"Are the funds going to be distributed based on how many cases each of those municipalities has had? Or that they anticipate having in terms of matching that with testing in each of those areas?," she said.

Silvera says increased testing needs to go hand in hand with more contact tracing to actually stop viral transmission.
