Hi, my name is Katie Bishop, and I’m a song addict.
As a producer at Soundcheck, I hear a lot of music. I watch videos… I download track samples. I stream new singles on Soundcloud. I hear bands playing in our studio. I occasionally take the time to remove the shrink wrap off of a CD and pop it into my CD player. But most of the time, the music I hear just washes over me. I make a snap judgment about it, decide whether I like it or not -- and I move on.
Except for when I don’t.
For the past two months, I’ve been stuck on one song -- Sylvan Esso's “Coffee”. And by that I mean that I play this song over and over, several times a day -- sometimes even on repeat.
Now, I know I’m not alone in my musical compulsion. There are lots of us out there who get a little obsessed with one particular song and listen to it over… and over... and over again. In fact, I just Googled it, and according to the website IsItNormal.com, 88% of people report this type of activity to be, yes, normal.
But it still feels like a weird secret. Do I really want you to know that "Coffee" has been played 57 times at my desk in the past two weeks? That it's something I actively look forward to? That I get cravings for it, and sometimes even use it as a reward? (“Okay, if I just reply to this one email that I’ve been putting off -- Coffee time!”)
No, I don’t really want you to know that.
So why does this somewhat embarrassing phenomenon affect so many of us? And why, in my case, is it happening with this particular song? A conversation that we had with neuroscientist Elizabeth Margulis earlier this year lends some insight into the first question. Her fascinating book On Repeat talks about musical repetition of all types -- including the very syndrome that currently has me in its grasp.
As she told us on Soundcheck, people often like hearing the same thing over and over again because “it's really gripped you, it's absorbed you in a way. And part of that is because you really know exactly what's coming next. You're able to think and listen ahead to the music in a way you couldn't at first.”
Her book also talks about the opposite effect that’s sure to follow -- the huge hedonistic tumble that takes place in nearly everyone who’s overdosed on a song. Listen too repetitively, and chances are you’ll end up actively disliking the song you’re stuck on. (I'm looking at you, "Countdown.")
The second question -- why "Coffee"? -- is perhaps harder to puzzle out. Some magical combination of the irresistible beat, lead singer Amelia Meath’s great voice, and the danceable lyrics that seem perfect for summer? Those little chimes that come in throughout the song? Or, maybe it's just that I really freaking love coffee, especially of the iced variety? Whatever it is, I don't hate it just yet -- so looks like I’ve got plenty more listens to figure it out.
